The 'Y' of LIBERTY is joined to star 11, which in turn heavily touches star 12. Reverse wreath bears four berries. The truncation of Liberty's bust bears an interesting countermark-like crescent suggesting a new moon. The reverse rim bears faint bruises at 9:00 and 11:00. Capped Bust, Large Eagle Reverse Half Eagles Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 2030 1798 Breen 3-E (R-5+). Large 8, 13 Stars. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $30,000.00 - with claims to Choice. Wholesome honey gold surfaces are quite lustrous. A thin die crack runs from the rim through the seventh star then through the bust ending in the 8 of the date. Just over 30 examples are thought to exist of this rare variety. The opportunity to purchase this variety does not come often and bidding for such a pristine specimen will surely be spirited. 2031 1800 Br.1-B (R-4) AU $5,100.00 About Uncirculated. Honey gold surfaces retain a good deal of mint frost in the protected areas. Some very faint hairlines and a trivial mark behind Liberty's head noted for accuracy. The strike is more than ample and the overall appearance of this specimen is very pleasing. 2032 1806 Knobbed 6. Br.5-E (R-3). Brilliant Uncirculated BU $9,500.00 Light greenish-gold toning over frosty surfaces. The strike is excellent with each hair curl strong. A tiny obverse rim tic is mentioned for accuracy's sake. There are some light mint-made adjustment marks in the hair and cap that do not detract severely. A very pretty coin that should please most collectors. 2033 1806 Knobbed 6. Br.5-E (R-3). Brilliant Uncirculated BU $12,500.00 A meticulously detailed strike that fully brings out even the finest elements of the design is supported by dazzling yellow-gold lustre. The overall look of this specimen is that of a considerably higher grade. 2034 1807 Br.2-C. CH AU $5,500.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Lemon-gold toning over decent surfaces. The strike is average for the date with most of the details plainly visible. The obverse struck from lightly rusted dies with small die rust spots seen throughout the entire obverse. The lustre is good and helps give this coin excellent appeal for the grade. 2035 1807 Br.4-C (R-4+). Large 8, small 7 CH AU $7,475.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Boldly struck and lustrous with pleasing orange-gold over a greenish-gold patina. Small Numerals, Large Stars CH AU $7,250.00 Choice About Uncirculated with the robust appeal of Mint State. This dignified design is seldom credited to the industrious John Reich, more famous for his Half Dollars. This coin's remarkably full cartwheel lustre is particularly vivid on the virtually Mint State reverse, giving this coin its undoubted, satisfyingly hard-to-improve visual appeal. 2037 1810 Br.1-A. Large Date, Large 5 CH AU $3,100.00 Choice About Uncirculated. A well struck example that has nice lustre despite the fact that the coin has been lightly wiped. Some moderate hairlining is evident due to the wiping but this coin still possesses a decent overall appearance. 2038 1812 Br.1-A. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $5,500.00 - despite a gentle wiping on both sides. Greenish-gold toning over frosty surfaces. The strike is very strong showing John Reich's design in its majestic fullness. Classic Head Half Eagles Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 2039 1834 Plain 4. First Head AU $950.00 About Uncirculated. Pleasing yellow-gold surfaces exhibit abundant mint frost in the crevices of the devices and around the legends on this gently circulated specimen. Here is a well struck, entirely pleasing coin ideal for a type set. 2040 1838 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $5,000.00 - perhaps a bit better. Frosty mint lustre over decent surfaces. The lustre is first rate and beams off the fields. The strike is quite strong and adds further to this coin's great eye appeal. Liberty Head Half Eagles Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 2041 1846'D' 'D over D' CH AU $2,000.00 Choice About Uncirculated. This pale lemon yellow coin shows just a touch of wear. Careful inspection reveals light hairlines. The mint mark was punched extremely high and later corrected. A popular variety that is not usually found this nice. 2042 1858'C' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $2,400.00 - or essentially so in technical terms of circulation and forceful detail. Bright yellow-gold surfaces complement an exceptional strike for this late Charlotte date. A glass finds a few scattered contact tics, and a wisp of solder hidden at the lower reverse rim. Akers assigned Choice Very Fine as the average for this Branch Mint date. 2043 1860'C' CH AU $5,750.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Handsome red-gold lustre is especially vivid in the protected areas. The strike is well detailed and a glass is needed to find evidence of brief and untroubled circulation. Scattered light marks are to be discovered in the fields. One of 14,831 struck, and a high grade example of a date assigned the average grade of Very Fine-32 by Akers. 2044 1861 Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $6,750.00 - with claims to Gem. Pale coppery gold surfaces are bathed in frosty mint bloom for a wonderful appearance. A well preserved example with lovely eye appeal. 2045 1861 CH AU $700.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Bold lustre and just a touch of wear makes this Civil War era Liberty a handsome, desirable example. 2046 1861 AU $350.00 About Uncirculated. Substantial lustre remains on this Civil War issue. The coin is beautifully struck with just a touch of wear on the highest spots of the design. NGC AU50. 2047 1866 With Motto AU $2,600.00 A strict, forcefully detailed About Uncirculated example. The definition of the stars, hair curls, and feathers are all quite bold. Orange-golden surfaces enjoy frosty devices that are highlighted by the slightest trace of subtle rose. Very rare at or above the grade range offered here. This handsome, wonderfully original specimen is destined to be a cherished addition to the collection of...  more 2048 1866 With Motto AU $1,700.00 About Uncirculated and offering plenty of frosty mint lustre on either side. There is, however, a single shallow obverse edge bump at 11:00. Evenly struck and otherwise quite appealing in light of the great rarity of this important issue, of which only 6700 were struck. 2049 1866'S' With Motto AU $5,250.00 About Uncirculated or very nearly so. There is the slightest trace of pale champagne toning over pleasing orange-golden fields and design elements. An ample amount of mint frost completes this specimen. Despite its relatively high mintage of 34,920 pieces, this date is surprisingly rare. In fact, based upon auction records that are several decades old, there are at most one or two Mint...  more 2050 1867 CH EF $2,100.00 Choice Extremely Fine and a particularly wholesome example of this very rare date. Frosty devices are delightfully augmented by delicate wisps of coppery-red toning. Considering the rarity and circulated nature of this coin, the visual appeal truly is outstanding, and would satisfy even the most finicky of collectors. One of only 6870 business strikes minted of this date. 2051 1867'S' AU $2,200.00 A solid About Uncirculated with respect to wear. The mintmark, though certainly not bold, is completely defined and entirely legible. There is, however, evidence of a past light cleaning on the obverse. The surfaces are otherwise nicely balanced and retain their fair share of frosty mint lustre. Quite scarce as a date and certainly rare in the upper circulated grade range. As a matter of fact,...  more 2052 1868 AU $650.00 A very strong Extremely Fine, approaching About Uncirculated. This delicate greenish-yellow example retains plenty of definition. There are, however, signs of a past light cleaning on both the obverse and reverse. Highly elusive nonetheless, the reported business strike mintage being a mere 5700 pieces. 2053 1868'S' AU $1,500.00 About Uncirculated or essentially so from the standpoint of wear. There are, however, indications of a past rather light cleaning on either side. Frosty yellow-golden surfaces are a trifle too pale, and there are some very faint lines detectable upon close examination. This very scarce date enjoys a mintage of only 52,000 pieces. 2054 1869 AU $2,400.00 An evenly struck About Uncirculated example, and displaying traces of prooflike surface in the most protected areas of the design. A few very light obverse marks are visible with a glass, both at Liberty's temple and near the eleventh star. These defects, however, are entirely consistent with the quality of this very rare coin, and are mentioned only for the sake of accuracy. Both the obverse and reverse, however, are hairlined and exhibit noticeable indications of a past cleaning. Toned a yellow-gold that is accented by the slightest hint of delicate rose. Orange-golden fields and design features retain a full measure of frosty lustre. The definition in both the legends and devices is quite sharp; there being particularly bold hair curls, stars, and wing feathers. The reverse, in fact, borders on the Mint State category. Hints of ever so delicate rose toning highlight areas of the devices. The definition is bold, and both the fields and design elements feature an ample supply of frosty mint bloom. A measly 3200 business strikes were coined of this very rare date. With there being no more than a half dozen or so Mint State survivors, an example...  more 2058 1871'CC' CH AU $16,000.00 Choice About Uncirculated and a truly exceptional coin for this issue. Deep yellow-golden fields and design features enjoy bold definition as well as plenty of underlying mint lustre. In fact, the devices still retain traces of semi-reflectivity. Sharp, wholesome, and wonderfully compelling in every respect. This Carson City date is both rare and important regardless of the grade.
