1866'S' With Motto. About Uncirculated or very nearly so. There is the slightest trace of pale champagne toning over pleasing orange-golden fields and design elements. An ample amount of mint frost completes this specimen. Despite its relatively high mintage of 34,920 pieces, this date is surprisingly rare. In fact, based upon auction records that are several decades old, there are at most one or two Mint State survivors of this issue!
Ex June Sale (Stack's, June 21, 1979, lot 160).
Akers indicates that ''only one or two uncirculated examples of this issue are known'', and cites three auction records (Miles 1968, World's Greatest Collection 1946, and Bell 1944). It is important to point out, however, that as of the writing of this catalogue description, neither PCGS nor NGC has graded an example of this date above AU58.
