1823/2 JR.3. Large E's. Gem Brilliant Uncirculated. Prooflike obverse. Here is a stunning coin that shows full deep frost on Liberty with reflective fields surrounding. Boldly excuted with sharp curls and stars on the obverse, and the reverse sharp on all devices except for the claws and thigh of the eagle, which show minor striking softness. Light silver with golden peripheral highlights and a touch of blue in the fields. One minor speck in the dentils above the seventh star will identify this coin. Although no pedigree was included, the present coin may be one of the so-called Proofs reported in the Dime reference and Breen's Encyclopedia. On the reverse, the 'D' of UNITED is recut over an erroneous 'E', and this is one of the most dramatic recutting errors in this series. Certainly within the top half dozen known of the Large E's variety, and on par with the Bareford coin.
