Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $9,500.00 Perhaps better but limited by very faint hairlines beneath the gold and blue toning. Strong lustre and sharply impressed with full definition on Liberty's tiniest curls and all but a couple of obverse stars showing their full radial centers. Sharp on the reverse too, with more intense blue and gold peripheral toning, lighter silver at the center. Identifiable by a minute planchet void...  more 4163 1809 JR.1 (R-4) CH AU $1,900.00 Choice About Uncirculated. A sharp coin and desirable despite minor evidence of gentle cleaning long ago. Toned bright silver with a frame of peripheral gold and blue mostly on the reverse. A sharply struck coin that has minimal evidence of handling marks, and an early die state before the reverse die cracked. First year of issue and always difficult to find in high grade. 4164 1811/09 JR.1 (R-3) AU $1,100.00 About Uncirculated. The surfaces have more microscopic disturbances than normally encountered, peppering both the obverse and reverse. Toned with attractive light blue and russet in the fields. Early reverse die state with two minor cracks above the eagle and rim crumbling above 'MER'. 4165 1814 JR.1 (R-3). Small Date. Gem Brilliant Uncirculated GEM BU $70,000.00 Gorgeous toning ranges from sea-green to bright yellow-gold over vibrant lustre. The strike is very sharp save for a couple of obverse stars and the eagle's claws, both areas notoriously soft on this die pairing. A middle die state with minor clashing present around the eagle and swelling through 'ICA'. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $1,400.00 The obverse is Brilliant Uncirculated while the reverse is fully Choice. A loupe will discover a couple of faint hairlines on Liberty's face and bust which limit the grade. Bright silver is dominant with a touch of peripheral gold on both sides and a spot of colorful purple near the denomination. Middle die state with obverse swelling on the first two stars, reverse die cracks right...  more 4167 1820 JR.2 (R-3) CH EF $750.00 Choice Extremely Fine. Attractively toned in dark silver to gray with perhipheral hints of russet and blue. A middle die state with die clashing on the reverse. Well struck and exhibiting clean surfaces for the grade. 4168 1820 JR.11 (R-3). Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $4,000.00 A sharply impressed coin that is graced by attractive russet and blue peripheral toning. Reflective fields that display ample lustre and no problematic surface marks. Great eye appeal and certainly in the Condition Census for the variety. 4169 1820 JR.13. Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $2,800.00 Frosty with light gray to silver and pleasing to the eye. An average strike with softness on Liberty's uppermost curls and the eagle's thigh and claws. A couple of trivial nicks are found on the inside of stars five and six. Both dies show clashing from the central devices. 4170 1821 JR.4. Large Date. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $1,200.00 - with claims to Choice. An average strike with slight weakness on Liberty's uppermost curls and the eagle's neck. Silver-gray at the centers with a splash of peripheral blue and gold to frame the devices. The surfaces are clean and attractive for the grade. 4171 1821 JR.5 (R-3). Large Date. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $4,250.00 Full mint frost with lovely peripheral iridescence. Excellent surfaces but identifiable by a very minor hairline above Liberty's cap. Sharply struck on all but the eagle's claws, and these are always found thus. Splendid eye appeal for the grade. 4172 1821 JR.10 (R-3). Small Date. Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $3,600.00 Sharp and attractive with rich golden peripheral toning on the obverse and reverse, and framed by iridescent hues. Reasonably sharp on the devices, with softness found on the centers of the last few stars and the right claws. An impressive example of this issue, probably well within the Condition Census for the variety. 4173 1822 JR.1 (R-3). Gem Brilliant Uncirculated GEM BU $130,000.00 A stunning example of this elusive date and certainly close to if not The Finest Known. Mintage for the year was reported to be 100,000 pieces, although given the number that survive this figure may be too high or the mintage may have included coins dated 1821. Years of study have concluded that the 1822 Dime is the rarest Capped Bust Dime from 1809 through 1837, and one of the most difficult...  more 4174 1823/2 JR.1 (R-3). Small Es AU $500.00 About Uncirculated. Golden-gray throughout and evenly toned. There are two light scratches crossing Liberty, one down from her eye to lower curls, the other from her chin down to her clasp and curl below. Both are light enough to escape casual discovery. 4175 1823/2 JR.3. Large E's. Gem Brilliant Uncirculated. Prooflike obverse GEM BU $13,000.00 Here is a stunning coin that shows full deep frost on Liberty with reflective fields surrounding. Boldly excuted with sharp curls and stars on the obverse, and the reverse sharp on all devices except for the claws and thigh of the eagle, which show minor striking softness. Light silver with golden peripheral highlights and a touch of blue in the fields. One minor speck in the dentils above...  more 4176 1823/2 JR.3. Large Es. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $2,000.00 Virtually a Choice example. Gorgeous blue, sea-green and gold peripheral toning on both sides, with the centers lighter silver. Sharp on the obverse stars and curls, although not as bold as seen on the prior example of this variety, with the reverse well struck on all devices except the eagle's claws. Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $4,800.00 On the cusp of a full Gem grade. Light greenish-gold with flecks of blue near the rims, with abundant lustre in the fields. The strike shows minor central weakness on Liberty's curls and the neck and claws of the eagle. Probably within the top 20 known of this date, and most of those would be the equal of the present coin. The obverse die was leftover and not used in 1822, then overdated...  more 4178 1825 JR.1 (R-4). Gem Brilliant Uncirculated GEM BU $8,000.00 Blazing lustre in the fields and well frosted on the devices, particularly on Liberty. Rich coppery-gold toning around the periphery favors the obverse, less so the reverse. A tiny planchet streak connects the first star to Liberty's bust, another is found on her cheek. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $650.00 Faint hairlines, otherwise the present coin would grade Choice. Lustrous in the fields and enhanced by desirable blue and gold peripheral toning. Sharp and attractive, with no surface problems worthy of description. 4180 1827 JR.11 AU $375.00 About Uncirculated. An average strike for this issue but marred by a dull scratch on Liberty's cheek, and others on the reverse below UNITED and around the 'ES' of STATES. Gold and blue toning throughout. 4181 1828 JR.1 Small Date. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $425.00 Light to moderate hairlines on both sides and a touch dull with gold to gray hues over the coin. The reverse die shows two distinct clash marks. Sharp on the claws but weak on the eagle's neck. Later die state with the lumpy die crack at 'AME'. 4182 1828 JR.2 (R-3) Large Date. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $6,500.00 Bright and lustrous with a trace of prooflike reflectivity in the fields. Delicate peripheral gold on the obverse and reverse and highly appealing for this issue. Sharply struck on the obverse stars and upper curls, but weak on the lower curls of Liberty and the eagle's neck, as frequently seen on this later die state. The reverse has three die cracks which extend to the motto ribbon,...  more 4183 1829 JR.1 (R-4) Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $1,200.00 The obverse is prooflike in the fields, while the reverse is more satiny. Toned with lovely deep russet and blue at the periphery, light silver at the centers. An average strike with softness on Liberty's curls and the eagle's neck and claws. There are no surface problems that distract the eye. 4184 1829 JR.2 AU $260.00 About Uncirculated. Lemon yellow and russet peripheral toning on the obverse and reverse. Quite attractive and sharply struck overall. A few shallow nicks on Liberty's cheek and sharply struck. 4185 1829 JR.7. Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $4,000.00 Sharply struck throughout and wonderfully toned with vibrant teal and russet with rose-gold to the centers. Such toning is found when a coin is stored in a Wayte Raymond coin page for decades. A few faint hairlines can be seen crossing the obverse, but are visible only at certain angles. No other surface problems exist. 4186 1829 JR.7. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $850.00 Nearly Choice. Attractively toned with bluish-gray in the fields, lighter gray at the centers. Scattered handling marks can be discerned with a loupe. The strike is fairly sharp, but not as sharp as seen on the other example of this variety in the present sale. 4187 1829 JR.11 (R-4) Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $6,000.00 Gorgeous pastel iridescent hues on the obverse and reverse. Sharp on the stars, curls and eagle's neck, although trace weakness is found on the claws. Especially nice for this date and particularly so for this scarce variety. Certainly in the Condition Census for the die pairing, and a very pleasing coin for the strike and toning. 4188 1830 JR.6. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $800.00 - with claims to Choice. Tawny gold toning in streaks over the surfaces and lustrous. Generally bright centers, and sharp. An impressive example. Middle die state with a die chip in the lower portion of the '3', and the period is present after the 'C' in the denominaton. 4189 1830 JR.6. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $550.00 Rich peripheral toning on both sides, but there is some rim damage on the reverse above 'UN' of UNITED and 'ER' of AMERICA, plus a small nick above star seven. A few hairlines can be seen with a loupe. Despite the problems, this coin has strong eye appeal. 4190 1830 JR.7 (R-4). Brilliant Uncirculated BU $550.00 Icy mint frost and bright silver with a blush of gold. No surface problems and attractive. Later obverse die state with minor cracks on Liberty and one in the field extending down toward star twelve. Certainly one of the top half dozen known of the variety. 4191 1831 JR.5.
