One of the two key early dates, with a mintage of only 3,918 struck (combined with the 1797 issue). Two varieties were struck this year, one with 15 stars on the obverse (offered here) and the other with 16 stars (see next lot). This piece is medium gray in the center with iridescent blue and rose around the periphery on the obverse. The back is nearly uniformly pale gray with just a touch or iridescence in places at the rim. There are ample details remaining for the grade, especially on the reverse. Some of Liberty's hair curls behind her back are still sharp and separated. On the back, some feather detail remains inside the eagle's wings. The right obverse field has been smoothed to obscure old graffiti there.
