Both sides of this scarce (R-4) date are deeply toned in rich silver gray. The obverse has iridescent gold around the rim while the back is toned in places at the rim in pale green. Light gray and pale gold color in the centers, iridescent blue and green around the rims. Fairly well struck in the centers suggesting an even stronger grade than the one we have awarded the coin. One of the two key early dates, with a mintage of only 3,918 struck (combined with the 1797 issue). Two varieties were struck this year, one with 15 stars on the obverse (offered here) and the other with 16 stars (see next lot). O.102 (R-6) CH F $37,500.00 Choice Fine. A very rare variety of this date, tougher than the other (see preceding lot) which is rare enough in its own right. This example is a nice color match to the one offered above. The obverse is mostly medium gray in color, the shade being lighter in the middle, with iridescent blue and rose around the rim. An important example of this rare date and a very desirable specimen for an advanced date or type collection. Both sides are a pale silver gray in color almost everywhere. Glossy from a past cleaning, surfaces have now recovered to a graphite gray with iridescent peripheral toning. 170 1802 O.101 (R-3) F $750.00 Fine. Central obverse is a lovely graphite gray and is ringed in rainbow toning at the peripheries. The reverse, on the other hand, is a gritty matte silver tone and shows signs of a past wiping. 171 1803 O.104 (R-3). Small 3 EF $2,000.00 Extremely Fine. Some scattered light marks are masked by gorgeous golden gray toning at the central obverse, turning to lavender, blue and gold toward the peripheries. The reverse is a glossy bright silver from a past cleaning, with hints of blue and gold toning returning to the protected areas of the fields. 172 1805 O.104 (R-4). Normal Date CH VF $850.00 Choice Very Fine. Here is a most perfectly toned specimen of this date featuring a circle of golden gray at the center, radiating to rose, blue and silver-gray toward the peripheries. The reverse is mostly golden gray, with a thin iridescent toning band at the periphery. 173 1806 O.105. Knobbed 6. Stem Through Claw VF to EF $320.00 Very Fine to Extremely Fine. Graphite gray obverse hosts hints of rose and blue, while the reverse is a matte silver tone with golden hues at the peripheries. 174 1807 O.106 (R-3) AU $1,500.00 About Uncirculated. Final year of issue of the Draped Bust type, which was changed later in 1807 to the Capped Bust design. This specimen is pale silver in color on both sides, the obverse graced with iridescent blue around the rim, the reverse with pale gold toning around the periphery. O.113a VF $900.00 Very Fine. Deep blue and gold toning over weakly struck surfaces. Has an attractive look; 1809 O.107. Very Fine but the surfaces have been cleaned and now the coin has retoned a blue and rose-gold; 1811 O.105a. Fine. Deep iridescent obverse toning, the reverse toned a light gold and is weakly struck. 3 pieces. 176 1808 Normal Date. O.104 (R-3) CH EF $300.00 Choice Extremely Fine, nearly About Uncirculated. Frosty mint lustre fills the fields of this specimen that is toned in colors ranging from graphite gray to iridescent blue and gold. A minor edge bruise is noted near tip of bust. 177 1810 O.103 EF $160.00 Extremely Fine. Iridescent tones ring the peripheries of this gently lustrous coin. 178 1812 Large 8. O.104 VF $425.00 Very Fine. Intense iridescent toning on the obverse, the reverse exhibits a pale gold; 1813 O.105. Very Fine. A nicely struck example that has deep iridescent toning on the obverse while the reverse has a lighter shade; 1814 O.105a (R-4). Single Leaf reverse variety. Very Fine. Deep iridescent toning over pleasing surfaces. The single leaf variety is very scarce. 3 pieces. 179 1815 Perfect Date. O.101a AU $3,500.00 Extremely Fine and strong for the grade, nearly About Uncirculated in point of wear. The strike was strong and all the stars show inner details. Liberty's hair is sharp and the locks are individually separated. The piece is toned in iridescent blue around the obverse rim while the back is mostly silver with a touch of gold around the periphery. Cleaned long ago. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $500.00 Bright and lustrous with complete lustre cartwheels showing on the obverse and reverse. There is attractive iridescent toning visible around the peripheries of each side. The centers are well struck for the date. Signs of an old cleaning. A very pleasing coin. 184 1825 O.101. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $900.00 A very appealing coin and a good choice for the type. The obverse is deeply toned in iridescent blue around the rim, silver and gold in the center. The back is light silver, gold, and paler iridescent blue. There are lovely Mint lustre cartwheels visible on each side. Light iridescent toning over sharply struck surfaces; 1827/6 O.102. Choice Very Fine. Medium iridescent toning; 1828 O.109 (R-3). Square Base 2, Large 8's. Extremely Fine. An attractive example with deep iridescent toning over well struck surfaces. 3 pieces. 186 1829 O.112 EF $260.00 Very Fine. Deep iridescent toning over surfaces that show a slightly weak strike; 1830 O.117. Small 0. Extremely Fine or nearly so. Attractive old gold and iridescent blue toning over nicely preserved surfaces. 2 pieces. 187 1831 O.102 CH AU $400.00 Choice About Uncirculated. A lovely coin that exhibits old-time blue and gold ring toning over lustrous surfaces. Well struck and attractive. 188 1832 O.115. Small Letters Reverse AU $140.00 About Uncirculated and nearly Mint State in terms of wear. Abundant mint frost is evident amidst light wear. The color is creamy white, as the surfaces were probably brightened in the past. 189 1833 O.106. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $500.00 A coin with attractive eye appeal, lovely toning, and great lustre. It has definite claims to Choice status. The strike was strong on both sides. Some light reverse hairlines are noted in the fields. 190 1834 Large Date. Small Letters. O.106. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $1,300.00 A coin with wonderful color and great lustre. The obverse is ringed in iridescent blue and deep gold while the reverse is paler gold around the periphery. The centers are brighter silver in color. Both the obverse and reverse are fully lustrous with great cartwheels showing as the coin is turned in the light. Minor reverse hairlines over the date. 191 1835 O.108 (R-3). Brilliant Uncirculated BU $550.00 An interesting example of the date, the front toned in a football shape with deep gray at top and bottom, lighter silver in the center in an oval shape. The back is lighter silver with bright and appealing lustre showing. A few hidden tics are noted on the obverse. 192 1836 O.122 CH AU $550.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Very close to full Brilliant Uncirculated status. The front is nicely toned in a rich silver gray and deep blue with a brighter center. The back is paler in the center with bright lustre showing there, deep gray toning at the rims. Last year of issue of the long-lived Capped Bust type. Capped Bust, Reeded Edge Half Dollars Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 193 1836 EF $2,400.00 Extremely Fine and easily strong in that grade in terms of overall wear. The front is toned in medium gray and iridescent blue around the rim, with brighter silver in the center. The back is lighter silver in color with iridescent blue around the rim.
