1856 Snow 3. Repunched 5. High Leaves. Brilliant Proof, virtually Choice. An extremely powerful strike has brought out every last detail in the eagle and the wreath and has created knife-sharp rims and an edge that is fully 2mm high! Golden prooflike surfaces radiate hints of yellow and pale blue when rotated in the light on this stunning little jewel that is just a few hairlines away from a full Choice Proof grade. Snow believes that the Snow 3 variety represents the quantity distributed to Congress as a promotion of the pending coinage bill and notes that nearly all specimens of this variety are Mint State specimens that do not exhibit a full strike. He also indicates that a few Proofs are known and might indicate a pre-production run of Proofs. The present specimen appears to be one of these scarce Proof versions of Snow 3.
