Loss of the Brig ''Somers'' Medal, 1846. Copper bronzed, 57.7mm. By Charles Cushing Wright. NA-24. Uncirculated. Brig capsized in Vera Cruz harbor. Rev. British, French and Spanish longboats to the rescue, correct Latin legend PRO VITIS AMERICANORUM CONSERVATIS, For Saving American Lives. Experts objected that Wright's first legend, Pro Vita Americana suggests saving a single life, and the artist had to engrave a new die. Beautiful red mahogany.
Ex Kessler-Spangenberger Collection (NASCA, April 1981, lot 1717).
