MI-29. Major General Ulysses S. Grant Medallion, 1863. Leather, 102mm, 10mm thick. By Anthony C. Paquet. Uncirculated. Obv. Uniformed bust l. in broad border of laurel, oak, flags. Rev. Commerce seated above trophy of arms in stylized river and steamboat border. Brick-red color with very smooth surfaces, a faint hint of weakness appears on the highest points and the reverse shows two sunken areas that at first appear part of the design. A fascinating and extremely rare example of the non-metallic medals known to have been made by the U.S. Mint during this era.
Julian notes Gold, Silver, White Metal and Copper bronzed strikes but shows neither Leather nor Gutta-percha. A different Leather example of the Grant Medallion was lot 1683 in NASCA's Kessler-Spangenberger collection, but was described as showing surface cracks.
