Colony of New York. February 16, 1771. Five Shillings. No.11752. Signed by W.(alter) Franklin, T.(heophylact) Bache and A. Lott. Printed on moderately thin laid paper. Uniface, printed in black by Hugh Gaine. A decorative design with a top border cut showing seated Britannia supported by Indian and Commerce, at the left a beaver and to the right ships. At the lower right are the New York City Arms with motto. These cuts created by Elisha Gallaudet. At the left is 'NEW YORK' in a small panel. Choice Very Fine. A very sharp example of a denomination that met harsh circulation. Well margined and the several folds are all light. Some very modest face soiling and petty pinholes. Not many are finer than this example.
Elisha Gallaudet, an important member in the pantheon of Colonial numismatics, created the border cuts and New York City Arms for this issue date. He later made the cuts for New York City Water Works notes, the February 17, 1776 Continental Currency fractional issues (the ''Fugio'' notes), and the 1776 Continental Currency Dollars.
