Lawful Money of Massachusetts Bay. 1750. One Seventy-Second of a Dollar or ONE PENNY. No.8541. Signed by S.(amuel) Watts. Uniface, printed on sturdy, laid paper. 85mm by 61mm. Printed in black, using ornate wood cuts. The text is framed within a flattened octagon with Massachusetts motifs of codfish left and pine tree right; at the top is the scales of justice. On the bottom is motto RESTITUIT REM (The situation has been restored) in reverse image.
A very rare note and series, this is the second of two examples of this type in the Ford-Boyd collection. The first example we sold was in the Ford III Sale in May, 2004. We cannot recall ever seeing another one offered for public sale, let alone two examples from one collection. It does not hurt the cause that the grade is choice and the pedigree is strong.
A well printed note, though slightly skewed to the top. No engraving is off the paper. Nominally, Uncirculated, no folds or wear, but with some minor impairments. There is a short tear at the lower right, some corner rubs and corner pinholes. There is some light aging as well. Penned in code by Boyd at the lower right of the back as ''miryx''. Superior to the example in Ford III and perhaps the last note of this series to be offered at public sale for another generation.
Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate; Henry Chapman.
