1834 Plain 4. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated, with very strong claims to a higher grade. Small Head, Large Arrowheads variety. Fields are watery ponds of pure reflectivity, while the central devices and legends are frosty and toned a beautiful yellow-gold hue. This cameo contrast in fact lends this superb specimen the initial look of a Proof, and in fact it is not inconceivable that Proof strikings also emanated from these very same dies. The strike is bold and extremely sharp, bringing forth most of the fine details in Lady Liberty and the majestic bald eagle and raising the protective rims high above the chrome-like fields. The consignor of this lot, who collected mainly in the 1950's and 1960's, had written ''Gem Unc'' on the envelope containing this coin. Once viewed in person, you too will know why our consignor had thought so highly of this coin, as it will be sure to stop even the experienced collector of early U. S. Gold Coins in his tracks!
