Printed on laid paper with a strong consistency. 148mm by 115mm. The face printing is on the weak side which is a characteristic of the reused plate. Imprint of Timothy Green on the back. Ornate scroll work encloses text, at the base is lion motif (anti-raising device) with Colony motto and arms at the lower left.
This extraordinary example was discovered in 1955-56 in a small group that was subsequently sold to New Netherlands Coin Co. Amazingly, the second of two notes of this very rare type in the Ford-Boyd collection. Both are fairly equivalent in condition. The first example from the Ford-Boyd Collection, Serial No. 1965, was sold in our Ford III Sale as lot 546 for $18,400.00. Serial No. 1966 is the Newman Plate note. This example, the Ford III Sale note and the Newman Plate Note likely came from the same original source as evidenced by the close proximity of the serial numbers.
Choice Extremely Fine. There is a horizontal crease from old storage. The margins are nearly full and the paper exhibits the boldest embossing you could imagine on an early colonial note. A minor foxing spot on the back is trivial compared to the great beauty of this note. A Superb Example and of Great Rarity.
This note was turned up in 1955-1956 by Mrs. Dorothy Paschal who sold the note (along with a small group) to New Netherlands Coin Company. Dorothy I. Paschal was the collaborator with Walter Breen on Penny Whimsy, the revision of William H. Sheldon's Early American Cents 1793-1814.
