Possibly a Contemporary Counterfeit, but not catalogued as such by Mr. Ford. ''Signed'' by Peyton Randolph and Ro.(bert) C.(arter) Nicholas. Printed on sturdy, but thin laid paper. 79mm by 63mm. Uniface, printed in black. Ornamental cut at the right end with the Arms and motto EN DAT VIRGINIA QUARTAM (Behold Virginia contributes one quarter of the Arms) at the upper right. Denominational conversions on the top, right end, and bottom ornamental cuts. Once again, a rare series of pre-1773 notes. Peyton Randolph later served as President of the Continental Congress in 1774-75. Newman cites the counterfeit type on page 437. The paper diagnostic and plate characteristics are similar to three other Ford-Boyd Virginia counterfeits (see the May 24, 1760 10 Shillings above). However, the plate state might only be later and weaker. Very Fine, quarter folded with only partial edge splits. There are five minor strip repairs and the corners have been clipped. This clipping almost has an official look to it. Period endorsements on the back.
