Current Money of Virginia. Act of Assembly passed March 11, MDCCLX [1760]. Three Pounds (Twelve Crowns or Sixty Shillings). No.340. Signed by Peyton Randolph and Ro.(bert) C.(arter) Nicholas. Printed from a weaker plate state but quite different from the certainly counterfeit Two Pounds contained in the Ford-Boyd collection (sold as lot 839 in our Ford Part III Sale in May, 2004) and cited by Newman. Printed on thinner laid paper than previous acts. 90mm by 61mm. Uniface, lead cast cuts similar to previous acts. Ornamental cut at the left (very wide on this example) with Arms at the upper left, motto EN DAT VIRGINIA QUARTAM (Behold Virginia contributes one quarter of the Arms) in scroll. Denomination conversions in the top, right side and bottom cuts. A rare series for any note. Only 1,800 notes of this denomination were authorized and few have survived. Peyton Randolph later served as President of the Continental Congress in 1774-75. Very Good to Fine. Though the lower right corner is missing and rounded in, the note presents a bright appearance and has very wide margins for a note of this era. There is small body hole under the Nicholas signature. The signatures are bold.
