North Carolina. November 27, 1729 Act. Three Pounds. No.729. Signed by Wm. Downing, E.(dward) Mosely, Cullen Pollack, Tho.(mas) Swann, and J.(ohn) Lovick. Printed on laid paper. 93mm by 133mm. According to Mr. Ford's notes, fully genuine. All handwritten bill, with flourished ink indent (space between has serial number) at the top and octagonal white paper on wax seal at the bottom center. Denomination in one place and different signature placement from the Forty Shilling notes, consistent with serial No.514 in this collection. This note compares well with serial No.514 for handwriting and signatures, therefore they would be either be both genuine or both counterfeit and not split between the two. This comparison between the two notes might be the swing vote for the notes being genuine. Fine, a horizontal fold with two side splits. Mottled age toning and heavier foxing spots. Three back pen endorsements. No matter what the status of manufacture, very rare and a sharp example of this act.
The nature of the age toning is due to the humid conditions of the South. Their consistent appearance here certainly means they have been together for the most part for a long, long time.
