Provincial Convention of Maryland. July 26, 1775 (MDCCLXXV). Two and Two Thirds of a Dollar. No.1969....Provincial Convention of Maryland. July 26, 1775 (MDCCLXXV). Two and Two Thirds of a Dollar. No.1969. Signed by T.(homas) B. Hodgkin and J.(ohn) Duckett, very faintly. Printed on sturdy, moderately thick paper by F.(rederick) G.(reen), his initialed imprint on the back. 123mm by 64mm. Resolve for the manufacture of gunpowder. Allegorical representations on both sides. The face, from a woodcut by Thomas Sparrow, shows Britannia receiving petition (CONG PETI) of the Continental Congress from America, who tramples a scroll of SLAVERY. To the left is George III, trampling M.[AGNA] CHARTA and the ornate vignette is the burning of an American port under attack by the British fleet. At each end are mottoes AN APPEAL TO HEAVEN and PRO ARIS ET FOCIS (For altars and the hearth). The back allegory is the achievement of peace between America and Britannia; motto on scroll below is PAX TRIUMPHIS POTIOR (Peace is preferable to victory). In the corners, clockwise from the upper left, are T.SPARROW, F.G., LIBERTY and 1775.

A very well printed example. About Very Fine, a solid note with a few folds. There is a slight split at the bottom center and a minuscule slit in the center under 'TWO'. Some modest soiling on the back which is centered slightly upwards and there is small foxing spot on the serial number. A superior example of this wonderful note, a flavorful combination of history, engraving, condition and rarity.

Newman only prices this series up to Fine condition (which in itself would be an achievement for any collector to obtain). This denomination shows a print run of 7,096 notes per Newman's data.
