Provincial Convention of Maryland. July 26, 1775 (MDCCLXXV). One and Two-Thirds of a Dollar. No.8261. Signed by J.(ohn) Brice and J.(ohn) Duckett. Printed on sturdy, moderately thick paper by F.(rederick) G.(reen), his initialed imprint on the back. 125mm by 65mm. Resolve for the manufacture of gunpowder. Allegorical representations on both sides. The face, from a woodcut by Thomas Sparrow, shows Britannia receiving petition of the Continental Congress (CONG PETI) from America, who tramples a scroll of SLAVERY. To the left is George III, trampling M.[AGNA] CHARTA and the ornate vignette is the burning of an American port under attack by the British fleet. At each end are mottoes AN APPEAL TO HEAVEN and PRO ARIS ET FOCIS (For altars and the hearth). The back allegory is the achievement of peace between America and Britannia; motto on scroll below is PAX TRIUMPHIS POTIOR (Peace is preferable to victory). In the corners, clockwise from the upper left, are T.SPARROW, F.G., LIBERTY and 1775.
Very Fine or thereabouts. Several folds and some moderate soiling, but no severe flaws as often encountered and three grades above what is normally seen. There is a minor pinhole and Raymond's pencil code in the upper right wide margin. A very superior example that would fit very well into a representative collection of historical American currency, Maryland notes or any collection of the important and interesting.
Newman only prices this series up to Fine condition (which in itself would be an achievement for any collector to obtain). This denomination shows a print run of 10,512 notes per Newman's data.
