ILLINOIS. Thomas Long, per the Stephenson County Bank. 10¢. Freeport. 1860's. All blue, small format with padlewheeler. Unissued. POC. About Uncirculated; Wm. H.W. Cushman, per the Bank of Ottawa. 50¢. Ottawa. July 17, 1862 (part printed). Logger, plow oxen at work. Chas. Strober, Chicago. Issued, dated and pen endorsed on face. Fine to Very Fine, trimmed in along the bottom. 2 pieces.

Scrip notes were payable at banks, which served as a small change ''clearinghouse.'' In this manner, the small notes would be redeemed for larger banknotes when enough were accumulated.
