Colony of the Massachusetts Bay. June 18, 1776. One Dollar or Six Shillings. No.2231. Payable on June 18, 1778. Signed by W. Palfrey and S. Carlton. Printed on coarse paper. 71mm by 92mm. The standard design for the series: Within an arch styled cartouche is a small vignette, to the left of the text, of a patriot brandishing sword in right hand and holding draft of Magna Carta [text not printed on the broadside, but initialed 'M-A'/C-A'] in left. Obligation text with due date enclosed. On the back perpendicular denomination text between two sets of double lines.
A scarce series of larger format bills and genuine. Fairly strong paper, but some flaws. Fine or so. Creased and long bottom fold. Soiled on the face and back with moderate side splitting stripped with narrow paper from the verso. Two stains on the face. Boyd pencil code ''iiyx'' and ''22'' on bottom back edge [perfect code break]
Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate.
The $22.00 price for this note is fairly high and indicates the esteem the rarity of this series was held in versus the earlier Swords in Boyd's collecting focus of the 1910's to 1940's.
