1864 Proof-65 (PCGS). Sparkling gold and rose highlights on frosty motifs and deeply mirrored fields. A cameo Proof, though its contrasting nature is not noted on the PCGS holder. A boldly struck gem, a delightful survivor from a Proof mintage for the date of just 470 pieces, all of which were distributed with the silver Proof sets of the date; its production figure is a low number by anyone's reckoning. The present Proof 1864 dollar is from a die combination that is the first of three such combinations mentioned for Proof dollar coinage of the date in Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States by Q. David Bowers (1993, see below). Simply lovely in all regards.
PCGS Population: 15; 1 finer within any designation (Proof-67). The Bowers Encyclopedia has the following to say about the present issue: "Proof issue. Breen-547. Obverse: large date (as all dies this year); same four-digit logotype as used on the 1864 $20. Date to the right of normal. Shield point far left of the 1 in date; right base of 4 nearly over right edge of denticle. Reverse: the same die used to coin 1863 Proof dollars (No. 1 above). Less rare than the next two."
