1865 MS-62 (PCGS). Pale golden gray with strong underlying lustre and some prooflike reflectivity in the fields, particularly on the reverse. Sharply struck, again, particularly on the reverse. Centered Date variety. From a mintage of 46,500 pieces, much of which is believed to have been exported to Central and South America around the time of issue. Interesting die artifacts around date (see note below). The Bowers reference calls this date, "A great rarity in Mint State," information that comes as no surprise to specialists in the series. Choice for the grade.
Regarding the date area of the present specimen, the presently offered 1865 Liberty Seated dollar has certain anomalies around the date numerals that have not been seen before by the present writer (FVV), and are worthy of note. The unmistakable remnants of a serif can be seen just above the lower left serif of the 1 in the date, and several triangular marks can be seen around the 6 and most notably the 5 in the date, these closely resembling what could be the remnants of the upper right corner of the flag on the 5 in the date, and we also note what could be the top of an errant 5 well-hidden in the dentils immediately beneath that numeral. Certainly this specimen bears further study from specialists.
