Sullivan was a celebrated New York City attorney born in the South, who defended the crew of the Confederate raider Savannah during the Civil War. Rev. Sullivan in Grecian attire lighting torch held by youthful student of the law, NOBLENESS ENKINDLETH NOBLENESS. Struck by Janvier Duval, Paris, edge bears the firm's diamond-shaped logo, and ARGENT, Silver. Long regarded as a great rarity with five to ten known, a few examples have appeared over the past 15 years.
Originally issued with a blue-covered Sullivan memorial volume published by the American Numismatic Society, this medal was sponsored by the Southern Society in New York City as an award for excellence in the law by an aspiring student. Plans called for administration of the award by the ANS but this medal program fell by the wayside soon after the first few medals were struck.
