Letter from Bale and Smith Engravers to General A.W. Riley, Aug. 26, 1845. About Uncirculated. Addressed Gent. A.W. Riley, Portland Me and bearing a 30.1mm round vermilion cancellation NEW YORK/ 26/ AUG/ 10 CENTS. This hand-written letter discusses payment for and shipment of 2,400 medals from New York City to Portland, Maine. Elaborate blue-ink letter shows beautiful calligraphy but some interesting spellings, including ''came'' for ''come,'' and ''mone'' for ''money.'' Outstanding condition, a window into the operation of this great 19th century medal firm.
