The eldest son of Pompey Magnus, Gnaeus Pompeius (Junior) occupied the Balearic Islands early on in the African War. When Caesar defeated the Pompeians at Thapsus in April 46 B.C., the Pompeians decided to move their war efforts to Spain, which was in rebellion against Caesar's local commander Quintus Cassius. Pompey Junior joined his brother Sextus Pompey and the traitor Titus Labienus in Spain, raising 13 legions and assuming control of the south.
Their dominion was shortlived. On March 17, 45 B.C., Caesar defeated them at the Battle of Munda. Labienus died fighting, while Pompey Junior was captured and executed. Sextus Pompey and a host of his followers, though, managed to escape.
