1869 25¢. Judd 724 (High R-7 to R-8). Copper, PE. Liberty wears a Phrygian cap adorned on the front with three stars. A ribbon inscribed LIBERTY unfurls at her shoulder on the obverse. The reverse bears the legend STANDARD SILVER at the upper periphery and there is a wreath of oak and laurel that surrounds 25 CENTS at the center. Choice Brilliant Proof. Rose-red surfaces are quite balanced to the naked eye. Closer inspection with a glass yields some evidence of light speckling. This excessively rare trial piece almost never surfaces at auction. In fact, there is a dearth of auction appearances stretching back into the early 1990's! A paltry two specimens have been graded at PCGS (both of which are graded PF63RD) including this coin, with there being no examples graded by NGC as of the time of the writing of this auction description. We feel, therefore, very confident in asserting that the surviving population of this issue cannot total more than a pitifully low 3 to 5 specimens! This opportunity should not be taken lightly by those interested in completing this series. PCGS PR63RD.
