1864 1¢. Judd 355 (High R-7). Copper-Aluminum, PE. Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated. Here is a fascinating Brass-yellow Pattern without the designer's initial 'L,' struck in an experimental alloy of 90% Copper and 10% Aluminum. All details are exceptionally sharp from the crisply defined denticles to the oak leaves of the reverse wreath. This coin is one of several Civil War experimental alloys that were developed as part of the Mint's efforts to replace the Copper-Nickel Indian Cent with a lighter and less costly material, ultimately the ''French Bronze'' adopted this year. This delightful Pattern coin is one of three certified by the major grading services. PCGS MS64.
