1857 1¢. Judd 186 (High R-7). Copper-Nickel, PE. Gem Brilliant Proof. Pale gold covers this reflective Pattern, struck in a size slightly smaller than the Flying Eagle that was actually coined for circulation in 1857. The obverse presents a dignified Liberty head in a circle of 13 stars, the head essentially identical to the James B. Longacre design that would grace the 1865 Nickel Three Cents. This reverse was created in 1853 when serious efforts were first made to find a replacement for the cumbersome Copper Large Cent and presents a laurel wreath near the rim enclosing an exceptionally widely separated denomination, ONE/ CENT. This handsome specimen is one of only two that have been certified by the major grading services. PCGS PR65.
