1839 Judd 104 (R-3). No Name on Obverse. Stars on Reverse. Silver, Reeded Edge, Die Alignment IV. Original. Brilliant Proof, with claims to Choice. Although considered a ''Restrike'' by Breen, more current research shows that no Die Alignment I coins are known, and coins showing no signs or just a trace of the die crack through 'MERI' are considered Originals. On the present coin, a magnifier will find a hint of this die crack. The toning is rather deep gun metal blue with highly reflective fields and devices. The surfaces show minor mottling in the color around the eagle. For identification purposes, there is a minute scuff on the flat edge below 'NE' of ONE. No other surface problems are present, and this coin has attractive color overall and appealing surfaces. A premier rarity which is always in strong collector demand and finds feverish interest whenever displayed for the beautiful and historical designs. NGC PF62.
Ex Amon G. Carter Collection (Stack's, January 1984, lot 245); earlier ex Neil Collection, lot 35.
