1794 S.65. Shielded Hair. Details of Extremely Fine-45, but with some surface nicks and cleaned and retoned. A cluster of shallow small pits are found on and below Liberty's cap, but her face and the open right field are pleasing. On the reverse a couple of shallow, short scratches are found on the inside right of the left wreath leaves and a minor nick is found centered leaf pairs above the 'N' of ONE. The rims are excellent for the period, with three small and unimportant nicks, best seen when viewing the edge lettering. Cleaned and retoned a light tan color that is attractive and pleasing to the eye. No surface spots or areas of corrosion are apparent. The die engraver deeply punched the denticles into the lower left obverse rim, which allowed the struck copper to be quite high in that region, thus protecting Liberty's hair from the usual circulation wear. Hence this common variety is frequently found in high grade, as seen here. One for the collector who appreciates this type.
