1793 Wreath. Sheldon 9. Horizontal Stem, Large Round Bow. Mint State-65. The stem of the sprig parallels the top of the date, the reverse shows all four trefoils in the wreath lined up with the word CENT. The obverse shows a meticulous strike with full detail in all locks of Liberty's hair and a bold dot on her cheek.
The obverse is a pleasing light brown with an undercurrent of faded red. The reverse offers substantial red underlying superficial light brown with perceptible cartwheel effect as seldom seen or even heard of on any early Large Cents. This coin displays a very early die state. The obverse was struck from a perfect die, the reverse shows a very early die crack from CA in AMERICA to stem and bow, and a short crack from rim to the peak of the 'A' in STATES. The coin's needle-sharp Vine & Bars edge should be experienced to be believed.
This amazing coin personifies the term Condition Census, and it would stand at or near the head of any modern census that seriously sought the very finest specimens in existence. This example was a highlight of two of Stack's greatest sales, the May 1959 E. Yale Clarke Collection sale and the acclaimed October 1993 Reed Hawn Sale. Needless to say, finding an equal to this coin in the world today might well prove to be an impossible task. It is highly unlikely that a finer example could be found at any price.
