1851 $50.00. U.S. Assayer Augustus Humbert. .887 THOUS. K.6 (R-4). Extremely Fine. This example of the rugged California coinage of Humbert's Provisional Mint has seen its share of normal circulation but remains boldly detailed and appealing. The scroll with its raised 887 THOUS is crisply impressed, as are the national name and date. The outer AUGUSTUS HUMBERT legend varies in its completeness, becoming weak at 2:30 to 5:00. The edge reeding is somewhat unevenly distributed, but the rims are wonderfully free of the bumps and nicks that are all too common on surviving examples of these large Gold coins. The reverse shows a fine engine-turned pattern with two minor dings noted for accuracy. This impressive piece is an excellent example of the massive Gold Rush ''Slugs'' and a fine display item.
