1927'S' Choice Brilliant Uncirculated. Here is a thoroughly exciting Choice example of one of the great Saint Gaudens rarities, boasting glass-smooth cartwheel lustre that amplifies the beauty of a full strike. Typically this date's high reported mintage is totally misleading as a guide to actual rarity. Most of the 3.1 million coins struck were never released to the American public but ended their careers consigned to the smelter following President Franklin D. Roosevelt's 1933 Executive Order ending Gold coinage and circulation of Gold coins. David Akers reported that he knew of about 60 Mint State examples. PCGS has graded only 126 in all grades, only 23 of these as Choice and 14 in all higher classifications combined. The present coin's appearance offers a significant opportunity to collectors of Saint Gaudens Double Eagles or of U.S. coins in general. PCGS MS63.
