 1899 Gem Brilliant Proof and an entirely ''fresh'', wonderfully honest specimen. The fields are amazingly free of hairlines, so much so that we would be tempted to call this coin Superb were it not for a thin obverse planchet depression on Liberty's cheek. Rich orange-golden toning complements deeply frosted legends and design elements. The contrast exhibited on this coin is far and away finer than that typically encountered on proofs of this issue. We can certainly assert, furthermore, that although higher quality examples of this very rare proof issue occasionally reach the market, hardly any of those same coins can outdo the visual presentation of this jewel. A paltry 84 proof specimens were struck, most of the survivors of which cannot hold a candle to the presently offered piece. PCGS PR65DCAM.
