1873 Open 3. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated. A careful strike shows a remarkable boldness of detail, especially on the reverse. Canary-yellow gold lustre is rich and full, the obverse displaying a few minute contact tics typical of these large and heavy gold coins, but fewer than usual for a date Breen described as ''usually heavily bag-marked.'' The Open 3 variety was created after Mint Director James Pollock ordered Chief Engraver William Barber to create a new date logotype to eliminate the Closed 3 that too closely resembled an 8.
