Close examination with a glass also reveals residual traces of an 8 beneath the second 8 in the date. Gem Brilliant Uncirculated and enjoying glistening satin-mirror fields of utmost beauty. The design features, furthermore, are well frosted and offer excellent contrast. An impeccable strike is equalled only by wonderfully smooth surface quality. These surfaces are particularly impressive in light of the extreme fragility associated with mirrored fields such as those present on this example. In fact, it is indeed very likely that this stunning coin is among the top 6-10 surviving examples of this date. We should also reiterate that this low mintage issue (only 1,500 circulation strikes and 76 Proofs were minted) is often wrongfully assigned an essentially common date status in many price guides. Such a relegation is not at all justified, particularly at the lofty grade level offered here. NGC MS66.
