Rather well struck and impressive for this rare issue, with well defined devices on Liberty's head, thumb and skirt. The mintage plummeted to 208,000 pieces for the entire year. This drop was caused by a sharp decline in economic activity as the economy faltered while converting from the production of war goods to peace goods. Further disruptions were caused by the sudden decision to coin Silver Dollars again after a 16 year hiatus, and much of the minting capacity was directed to making those. Obtaining a frosty, well struck and lustrous coin of this date is always a challenge, particularly so with such pleasing surfaces. A thoroughly satisfying specimen for the advanced collector.

Ex Stack's Auction, December 1977, lot 69.

Lot # 1409 Session 1
