1911'S/S' Fivaz-Stanton 50¢-1911S-501. There is clear evidence of doubling at the upper inside curve of the mintmark, as well as to the left of the lower serif. This undertype mintmark appears as if it might possibly be a trifle smaller than the primary mintmark. Gem Brilliant Uncirculated. There is a single ever so faint obverse line at Liberty's jaw, otherwise this pale golden, sublimely smooth specimen approaches perfection. Unencumbered deep velvet mint bloom immerses either side in a most distinctive and attractive fashion. A rare date in full Gem condition regardless of the variety, and undoubtedly excessively rare at this grade level with this doubled mintmark. In fact, it is almost a certainty that this specimen is the finest known of this variety as even circulated pieces appear to be extremely difficult to locate!
It should be noted that this S over S variety is unlisted by Breen, Lawrence, Fivaz/Stanton, and Wexler/Miller. Flynn mentions that this variety was previously reported, but could not find an example by which he could make a confirmation.
