1895'O/O' The mintmark exhibits clear signs of repunching both outside its lower loop, and inside its upper loop. This unmistakable repunching is entirely unlisted in any major reference including those of Breen, Lawrence, and Flynn. Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated and enjoying remarkably deep mirrored fields that surround lavishly frosted, cameo design features. In fact, were it not for a modest degree of striking weakness at the ninth through twelfth obverse stars, the appearance of this coin virtually matches that of any Philadelphia Mint proof! We therefore must assert that this dazzling, delicate lavender specimen is, in all likelihood, a specially prepared presentation or specimen striking. In light of the highly unusual nature of the surfaces, as well as the dramatic repunching on the mintmark, we have every confidence that this coin will be well received by all serious Barber Half Dollar specialists.
Breen does list the existence of at least one proof of this date (ex Lester Merkin, June 1970, lot 311), however he does not give any particular details as to its characteristics. Perhaps some day the occasion will arise where the coin offered above could be compared to the Merkin piece (if this coin and the Merkin coin are not one in the same). Such comparison may indeed lead to an even stronger assertion than that which we make here regarding the piece currently being sold!
