1868'S' Gem Brilliant Uncirculated. This coin is among the Finest Known of the date, with perhaps three to five others that are its equal. The surfaces are alive with mint lustre and sport the slightest trace of golden haze. Examination with a magnifier fails to find fault, and locating any sign of contact is a challenge. For identification, there is a minute tick on the right wrist of Liberty, and a squiggly lintmark below 'TA' of STATES in the field above the motto. The strike is typically sharp, and this is an early die state before the die wear noted in Wiley-Bugert appeared. An outstanding opportunity to purchase one of the decidedly rare dates in a superlative state of preservation. All San Francisco Mint coins of this era are rare in Gem grades, and even Choice Mint State coins seldom appear of most of these late 1860s Half Dollars.
Purchased privately about 30 years ago.
