1860'O' WB.104. ''Eagle Laying Egg'' Variety. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated. Muted gold and russet over the entire coin, with traces of blue intermixed. The surfaces are attractive and free of distracting hairlines or nicks. Identifiable by a tiny rectangular shaped planchet flaw nearly touching the lower left point of the first star. This variety was so named by noted specialist Charlton Meyer as the 'O' mintmark is very high, and in fact touches the branch above, a feature unique to this reverse die. Normally the mintmark is placed lower and always clear of the branch. One can only wonder at the extreme stress experienced by the employees at the New Orleans Mint in 1860, with the outbreak of the Civil War only months away. Certainly in the Condition Census for the variety, with 3 other Uncirculated coins reported in the January 2004 Liberty Seated Collector's Club Census.
