 1840'O'. WB.102. Very Small 'O'. Brilliant Uncirculated. A conditionally challenging coin to find so well preserved. The present example is generally white in color with a hint of peripheral gold. The strike is decent for this Mint, and the surfaces retain lustre. Scattered handling marks on both sides, and identifiable by a short dull scratch up from the top left of the 'L' of DOL nearly to the claw above and by a minor planchet streak left of the date into the base of Liberty. A die crack on the reverse extends from the rim through the right serif of the 'L' of HALF to center talon of the left claw. The obverse die appears to have been lapped (weak definition on Liberty's left foot) and the fields show traces of die roughness near the edge. The January 2004 Census by the Liberty Seated Collectors Club reports 4 examples of this variety were known in Mint State grades, although we suspect the present coin was not included in that figure. An excellent coin for the specialist to put away from this popular Southern branch mint.
