1827 O.143 (R-3). Square Base 2. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated, a Specimen Strike. Called a Specimen Strike in our sale in 1998 and a Proof in a prior appearance in 1957. Examination by any knowledgeable numismatist will confirm that the fabric and texture of the present coin is quite different from the usual circulation strike. The fields are reflective beneath the toning. Clearly this coin was made as a specimen and was not intended for circulation. Toned with dark gray with lilac and rose hints over Liberty and the eagle, with blue and magenta mixed into the fields. The toning is quite beautiful when studied, and the reflective surfaces are well preserved. Identifiable by the tiny die dot over the beak of the eagle, the only reverse die to show this feature.
