1802 O.101 (R-3). Detail of About Uncirculated, but the surfaces have been whizzed and tooled. Snow white in color save for a trace of gold near the rims. The obverse fields show evidence of buffing and smoothing, perhaps to remove scratches or something similar. Evidence of smoothing is also present on Liberty's face and neck, and on the cloud below OF on the reverse. There are adjustment marks spanning the reverse, and these were apparently buffed down to some degree. On the positive side, the curls of Liberty are sharp and complete, the reverse too is boldly struck. One of the more difficult dates to locate in high grades, and the present coin could probably be made more presentable if allowed to tone. A coin that should be carefully inspected prior to formulating a bid.
Ex Terrell Collection (Bowers and Ruddy, May 1973, lot 396).
