1913 Type I. Gem Matte Proof. Immaculate fields show the delightful textured surfaces characteristic of the first date, both fields and diamond-sharp devices show a whisper of clear tawny red-gold to assure maximum eye appeal. One of 1,520 Proofs struck; PCGS has certified only 95 at this lofty grade. PCGS PR65.
Early Proof Buffalo Nickels were officially described as Matte, though this denomination generally shows more brilliance than Bronze coins struck with this short-lived Proofing process.
