1873 Trade Dollar. Judd 1322 (R-4). Silver, RE. Brilliant Proof or finer. Bright silver-white devices offer dramatic cameo contrast to deep liquid-glass mirrored fields. William Barber's stately Liberty is seated with a wide seascape at her left, the sloping base upon which she is positioned reaches to the right border quite unlike the adopted design. This reverse offers a tiny eagle holding a rose-like olive branch and three arrows. A scroll held in the beak is inscribed E PLURIBUS UNUM. Fields are splendidly reflective but show the swirling hairlines so typical of 19th century Patterns. PCGS has certified 40 examples of this important Pattern issue, only two in this precise grade.
