Universally regarded as America's most beautiful coin, the High Relief was born through the vigorous interest of President Theodore Roosevelt in the art of Augustus Saint Gaudens, America's greatest living sculptor. The President demanded a return to the high relief employed by the coiners of ancient Greece, a concept opposed and obstructed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber. The ailing Saint Gaudens did not live to see his innovative coin actually struck. His project was only successfully carried through by the ceaseless intervention of his associate Henry Hering. The High Relief coins would not stack for the convenience of bankers, but the lower relief, Arabic numerals pieces that were struck next did. Although they were not used in daily commerce, the High Relief pieces became the country's most famous gold coins, sought ever since by all collectors, if only in their dreams.
