1856 Choice Brilliant Proof. Despite some very minor signs of contact in the right obverse field, this is a beautiful coin and a rare issue. The surfaces are toned with delicate but rich gold hues, deepening to iridescent blue through the denticles. The mirror fields are well preserved and display minimal hairlines. Much scarcer than dates in this grade a few years later, and always in fervent demand by date collectors. This particular coin is identifiable by a minute speck under Liberty's foot on the right, and on the reverse by a minor toning or planchet streak through the upper portion of the 'M'. The obverse die has a minute raised lump in the field left and above the final star.
