Dark brown and evenly toned on the obverse and reverse, with pleasing surfaces. Scrutiny will find a small patch of corrosion nestled within the outer points of the second star, and thin short scratches hidden within Liberty's curls. The strike is quite sharp, with all the stars showing their radial lines, and the overdate feature is bold. Early die state. No spots or other detractions, and a thoroughly satisfying coin. Close to but not quite qualifying for the Condition Census of this variety. Rarely are these early Classic Head Large Cents found so problem free and in high grade, especially so for this popular overdate issue.

Ex Kolman Fixed Price List, January 1953; Harold Bareford Collection; Herman Halpern Collection (Stack's, March 1988, lot 268).
