1801 S.223. Blunt 1's, Fraction 1/000, Elongated Left Stem. About Uncirculated-55. A handsome and Choice example of this common and popular die pairing. The color is an even red-gold to tan on both sides, perfectly matched. Two minor toning spots are noted, one right of the date, the other on the upper right reverse left of the first 'A' in AMERICA near the denticles. A decent strike on the obverse curls, but soft on the left side of the wreath. This is the usual die state with the rim break over 'RT' on the obverse. Tied with 3 others as 7th Finest in the Noyes Condition Census from 1990, with others possible, but easily within the top dozen known.
Ex Herman Halpern Collection (Stack's, March 1988, lot 196); Harold Bareford Collection; New Netherlands privately June 1952; Virgil Brand; Hall-Wurtzbach lot 1464.
